MOSCOW, RUSSIA – Russia has Invaded Ukraine after months of building up their forces along the Ukrainian Border. Earlier this afternoon, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree in which he agreed to recognize two proxy states, the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republic(s), as independent nations. Shortly after, he ordered the deployment of Russian Forces as “Peacekeepers”.
The Move comes as the latest in an eight year long war between Russia and Ukraine, which began with the ousting of Viktor Yanukovych and the Russian Annexation of Crimea. Ukraine has since pivoted towards the West, seeking membership to both the European Union and NATO, which Russia sees, as a threat to its national security.
Earlier this morning, Vladimir Putin met with his national security council, where the decision was made to recognize the two proxy states as independent nations,
Since April of last year, Russia had conducted a buildup of forces along the Ukrainian Border, and in November, US intelligence became concerned that Russia was planning an offensive to take control of all of Ukraine. President Biden and other western leaders have prepared sanctions that target Russia’s financial institutions as well as its most prominent oligarchs.
Tonight, the UN Security Council in New York will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the situation, but due to Russia’s veto power, it’s unlikely anything is done to address the situation.
